There are lots of lessons to be learnt from this week’s momentous political news. These can be applied to other domains and organizations by successfully:

As both the Conservative and Labour parties discovered, substance over style was the key factor. Not spin. Political leaders need to be connected and in-tune with the electorate. Although the Bradford West election win was characterized by ugly, sectarian politics and ten thousand postal votes, George Galloway’s messages resonated with a huge winning majority. The Labour Party lost an important safe seat and most probably their second ineffectual leader as an outcome.

 

The Prime Minister’s PR background appeared to focus on style and not substance in his poor handling of the fuel strike.

 

In managing the message, substance is important in controlling the narrative. Political leaders severely tarnished their images this week.
