On her ninety-second birthday, my mother shared a story about her love and engagement to a Colour Sergeant in the Argyll Sutherland Highlanders. She left Elmstead Market, near Colchester, and travelled to Glasgow three times to meet her prospective mother-in-law. However, there is a sad ending to her narrative.
